A disease was sweeping through tobacco farms in the Netherlands, leaving plants withered with patches of dead and living tissue. A scientist injected sap from diseased plants into healthy ones, which then also grew diseased. He couldn't find any bacteria or fungi or parasites on the disease plants that weren't on the healthy ones so he dropped the project. But a few years later scientists decided to grind up the plants and pass them through a filter that would block plant cells,. They then injected that fluid into healthy plants and voila, disease.
