As political economy became more popular as a field of study, the book began to take on a different legacy. When you start to look at academic texts emerging in the early 19th century, there's systematically critiquing Smith. Regardless of what these later authors say about what Smith got right, they all agree that Smith was the founder of the science; he put the flag in the sand.
