Competition Is Good for Science, Technology and Humanity

I would like to advocate that in general competition is good, both for science, technology and humanity more generally. The Americas would not have been discovered unless there has been a competition between the Portuguese which discovered the Pacific Islands in 1512 and the Spanish who discovered the Americas. A metaphor for any new world is provided by this example. There are resources in space and commercial opportunities for new technologies that would not be harnessed otherwise. And the competition, if you look at the past, led to innovation.
