Freud famously saw his nephew or his grandson throwing a cotton reel. He kind of posited that this is in one sense the beginning of language, because language requires two signifiers. The absence generates the possibility of presence. Presence generates the anticipation of absence. This kid was getting immense pleasure from controlling presence and absence. So that's kind of scientific cause and effect thinking, right? It's a presence and disappearance. Matt: Do you want to comment on that first?
