Gabe Wannant is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Chicago. His new book, The Next Shift, chronicles the rise and fall of industry in Rust Belt America. He says he wants to show that class isn't something that used to exist or doesn't exist anymore but rather composite heterogeneous formations which lay down historical institutional deposits for next generation's formation.
