Amati, the Former Capital of Kazakhstan, and Across Central Asia, Where We Find Our Somewhat Unlikely Hosts
Millions of people ended up in Amati, the former capital of Kazakhstan. They arrived here at one of the city's train stations and we had people from all strata of society crammed into the same cattle trucks. We had famous figures, artists like the Soviet film director Sergei Eisenstein or the poet Anna Akmatova - including my Polish grandparents. Today as I stand here at the station it's a somewhat uncharacteristically grey and blustery day, and I can't help but wonder what it was that they saw when they arrived.
