The Rise of Unnecessary Book Bands
This week a Florida school district banned Amanda Gorman's beautiful poem which was turned into a book, The Hill We Climb. Ron DeSantis created legislation that requires schools to remove books immediately based on a complaint from a single parent. According to Pen America, 565 books were banned in Florida schools for the 2021-2022 school year. Robbing children of the chance to find their voices in literature is a violation of their right to free thought and free speech.
