At the core of it, I had Jeff's story, or the beginnings of Jeff's story. This relationship between someone who rescues somebody and the person they rescue came from over 20 years ago. The abandoning process did involve a lot of drafts,. There are parts of this fairly short novel that a line or two that ended up in it represent 10 or 20,000 words somewhere on my hard drive. It was while working on the sacrificial twin novel that I was actually rereading Austerlets by Seyball.
