Fred Hampton was a leader of the Black Panther Party in Chicago. He rose to leadership after being contacted by Bobby Rush, who would go on to be a congressman and member of SNCC. "It doesn't seem that there was a way for him to exist in the world other than being animated by those principles," says author David Frum.
