Frederick Douglass's Journey to New York City

Frederick Douglass was first hired out to a shipyard in Baltimore. But after being attacked by a group of white laborers which is something the authorities refuse to investigate because no white witness would attest to it. Eventually he asked for permission to hire himself out during his off hours. And this would allow him to keep the pay above and beyond what was due back to the Aulds. He secretly planned to save this pay in order to fund his escape.
