Popper had just written the open society, a book that was supposed to analyze the roots of totalitarianism. He thought philosophers had something to tell us about contemporary society. Poppe's extended family had been wiped out in the holocourse and he himself fled vienna just in time. And so the idea that philosophy wasn't addressing what was going on in the world is almost a dereliction of philosophical duty.
