Elijah Bond and Helen Peters applied for a patent on the Ouija board in 1891. To prove that it worked, they had to spell out his first name using letters from the alphabet. The clerk was allegedly shaken by their actions but gave them the patent anyway. It does not give any mention of channeling spirits or how questions are answered - there's no explanation at all.
