The Role of Race in Shakespeare's Athello
In Chintheo's story from which Shakespeare takes a fellow none of the characters except Desdemona is named. We have a character called Moore, Shakespeare's Athello, a Captain, Shakespeare's Cassio, and an Ensign Shakespeare's Iago. This suggests that what's important about Athello is that he's jealous, not that he's black, whatever black means. Jealousy is not a racial identity. Irrational jealousy is not a particular quality of Moore's in Shakespeare's own work. Aaron, black character in Titus Andronicus, has lots of flaws but sexual jealousy is not one of them.
