The History of Tyranny in Greece
From 7th century BC onward, tyrannies became a recurring feature of political life in the Greek palais. Tyrants generally emerged not as individual demagogues, but as leaders of factions within an already existing aristocracy. Aristocrats and archaic Greece were drawn to athletic competitions like flies to honey. The biggest were the Panhellenic festivals and games, which drew in participants from all across Greece.
