The Barbarity and Violence of the British Empire
Jan Morris: One of the quotes that stuck out to me was every empire rests on force that the British were not habitually cruel. So my question off the back of that quote is what do you think fueled the barbarity and the violence of the empire? And did these reasons change over time? I remember asking, I think in the podcast we're done with the mother that are asking again about kind of talking about empire, whether it was inherently evil or good or not. You made a very good point. People criticize the British for being nostalgic about empire, but you won't meet many Sikhs who will say the sea camp hours weren't lovely cosmopolitan and benign.
