The City of Constantinople
Around the year three, 30, constantinople also built an imposing city wall running between the golden horn and the sea of marmura. The first christian emperor claimed that an angel had guided him about where to place the walls,. He built them a great distance from where the old city walls had been, an impressive statement about how large he expected his new capital to grow. By the beginning of the fifth century, byzantium had spilled out even beyond constantine's ambitions. To day, we can trace the expansion of the city in the advancing rings of its city walls, growing outwards like the rings of a tree.
