How Do You Navigate Using a Map?

i really don't like having to navigate based on just moment to moment directions on an ap without seeing the entire route first. I like to look at the whole map, see what steps or see how far it is. That really matters to me for some reason. i feel i get something closer to the ettak system, where i just want to be able to dualize, in this abstract way, the whole of the journey and sort of imagine where i am along the journey at various points.
