CHAPTER

The Mississippian Cultures

Mississippian culture and traditions flourished along many of the river valleys of the eastern United States. Cahokia in Illinois is believed to have housed a large building inside that may have been an important temple or administrative building. Copper artifacts depict bizarre images and living beans which suggest a spiritual connection to the warrior culture. Mississippian cultures were discovered by the first European settlers who wrote about the traditions of the Native Americans so these warrior and priestly cults were consistent with what was observed on their first arrival in the Americas.
