Eric Lander: There was empty space next to the MIT campus, the so-called Kendall Square area. He says it's not that anybody said, let's build Kendall Square. But then the human genome came along in 2000, and all of a sudden we had all 20,000 genes laid out in front of us," he says. And that's burned the next stage in the revolution, where companies were formed to treat all manner of diseases; that really led to Kendall Square.
