I like to stress the importance of being a self-starter. You can wait for opportunities to be presented to you or you can choose to go after the opportunities that are there. Professional development is huge, whatever courses you can get. The unit you're in as well may also be able to unlock some opportunities and some doors. So I wouldn't hesitate to ask within the unit.
