I mean, we saw several points in time where he had outbursts throughout the film. So he had to do whatever he would normally do coming home from school to keep himself on his routine and feel like everything's okay. If you were him, you might be thinking, no, my job is to make sure that the routine keeps going,. That might be the only way he's at all keeping it together. I mean, how is he going to survive that? He wouldn't.
