In the spring of 1864, Ulysses S. Grant traveled east to become general in chief of the entire Union Army. He had resolved to crush Robert E. Lee's forces no matter what the cost. The previous summer, the tides of war had finally turned in the Union's favor. But as the Civil War entered its fourth year, Union fortunes reversed.
