Are There Any Other Bad Things About Phones?
This idea that there are things in our environment that can attract our attention and that resisting that urge to pay attention to them comes at a cognitive cost is not new. Another prime example is the sound of your own name. What's neat and perhaps sometimes cognitively dangerous about our phones is that there's so many different attractive appealing things in one package. We're attracted to social connection. We do respond to things like outrage. And we can see a lot of these adaptive urges that have guided us pretty well throughout human history now being bundled into a device where they might be directed in different ways and amplified.
