The Chinese Exclusion Act

The Chinese Exclusion Act was our country's first major federal immigration restrictions. It effectively halted legal Chinese immigration into the country and blocked our pathway towards citizenship for over 60 years. The act started in 1882 and then went on until the 1940s during World War II when the US needed China as an ally against Japan.
