The Uncertainty Essay
There's an expectation that statistics provide certainty about things that are uncertain. The incentives, both within publication and in the public sphere, are to be more certain than you really are. We tend to perceive learning something new as finding a statistically significant estimate. It also takes a lot of care with words and it requires more words almost always to do a careful job of this.
