John peckham: The god of the bible is nothing if not a god who makes promises and keeps his promises, right? He's a covenantal god in that sense. So if he makes a promise, his future action is limited to within the bounds of that promise. And it seems to me like prayer is one of the factors that might act as a trigger claus in some circumstances. We shouldn't just pray for god to do something, but we should do whatever we can do within our sphere of influence - so to speak.
