CHAPTER

Freud's Contextualization of the Free Essays

The 1905 free essays is the first text in which Freud adopts conceptual framework from psychiatric and sexualological literature. The conception of infantile sexuality is articulated by Freud in sharp contrast to his predecessors who had made no principle distinction between a sexual drive and an instinct for procreation that is both natural, normal, and function. By the example of kissing amongst others, Freud argues that what his predecessors would have had to classify as a perverse activity was actually part of normal sexual life. This leads Freud to adopt the notion of the polymorphous perverse nature of the sexual drive.
