Nitrogen Scavengers for High Ammonia Levels

Rahul: Patients who have acute hyperaminemia first of all and most likely will need admission to the PQ. We typically start these patients on a lipid emulsion and IV fluids with at least 10% or greater glucose to reverse catabolism and dehydration. And in a landmark trial published in New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 these therapies along with adequate calorie intake reported lower plasma ammonia levels especially in children with urea cycle disorders.
