The History of Centrifugal Governors

James Watt and his partner Matthew Bolton invented the first centrifugal governor in 1788. The device was used to control speed of a millstone by measuring its rotational speed through a whirling pendulum. It is reported that about 75,000 governors were used in Britain around 1868 - 80 years after their invention.
