Conner O'Neill was born in bishop ortland, a coal miner's daughter. His family moved away when the mines closed down and bus routes stopped. He went on to study at Harvard University where he became fascinated by American culture. The book is about his experiences of growing up among people who have left their homeland for other parts of the world.
