The different colors of soil really come from the variety of nutrients that are broken down to, or I would say nutrients. That's one source of color. But then there is also a source of color from the chemical reactions. Redish soils tend to have more iron oxides and wider soils tend to contain more salt or silicates or calcite. Black soil has more decomposing organic matter stuff. And there are even greenish soils that have gloconite, which is an iron potassium phyllo silicate.
