Deep canvassers want to avoid that unwinnable fight. They allow a person's just ations to remain unchallenged. The idea is to move forward, make the person feel hurt and respected. Instead of defending, they begin contemplating. And once a person is contemplating, they often produce their own counter arguments. If enough counter arguments stack up, the balance may tip in favor of change. After evoking negative emotions like this, amazeurs ask people if their opinion has changed - and they re ask them where they are on the scale of zero to ten. It's like we are solving a mystery together.
In this episode I read an excerpt from my new book How Minds Change, a portion concerning how to change minds about abortion rights, and Chris Clearfield interviews me about that very same book - which is out now and available everywhere.
