The Rise of the Athenian State
Engels describes the Athenian state as a democratic republic in which all male citizens had a voice in government. But he notes that this democracy was limited to a small minority of the population. The wealthy aristocracy controlled most of the land and resources while the majority of the population lived in poverty and struggled to make a living. In the United States, the state and Athens created a police force made up of slaves with property considered beneath them.
