The Importance of Structural Adjustment
In the 60s, you had a guy named General Joseph Maboutou. He came to power, and he said he would live on a soldier's salary. The thing is he ended up becoming like a Cold War ally of the U.S. And we didn't necessarily care about the mass of human rights violations that he perpetrated against his own people. So what we would get out of supporting him were three things: We would get interest payments, we would get cheap resources and labor, and we would get control.
