Does the Universe Need Cause and Effect?

Up to the end of the programme, we'll be asking the question, does the universe need cause and effect? The whole goal of physics is to break out of that box and understand something universal. And so it's pretty hard to imagine that you could have a universe without cause effect. But just because it's part of our minds doesn't mean it has to be part of the universe, right?
