Carpenter could be seen as a popular modernist in the Fisher sense of the term. He wasn't really trying to do high art in any sense at all with his movies. They were firmly rooted in science fiction and horror and fantasy, the type of jearns that were usually looked down upon. And just the fact that it's like, yeah, a pulp vehicle for delivering these concepts.
