Vera Hasenfeld made an observation in the Arizona desert that would upend what physicists thought they knew about the universe. She had a few options: dismiss it or collect more data, then come out with a grand sweeping conclusion based on limited data. In science, it can be a bit of a race; she went for option three and never assumed anything.
