The Myth of the Self-Made Man
The US wants to cast itself in a very different light, says McCarthy. Emphasizing individuality as the myth of the self-made man does also lead to the idea that there is a fair chance for everyone,. And you just need to take that chance and make something out of your life. In doing so, it places very little emphasis on the idea that you are part of a collective where you care for each other.
