In the 1830s, was this done in a hush hush? Where was it like, yeah, people have abortions? Mark Twain said that it had become common for people to ask for an abortion from doctors easily as they would ask for a tooth to be pulled. And at the beginning of Madame Ristel's career, abortion was criticized, and the criticism was that this was going to enable adultery.
