The Importance of Free Trade in the Mandates

During the 1920s and 1930s, there was an economic slump in Europe. This drastically reduced the amount of money European governments had to spend on Mandates. It also made it far more difficult for mandatory powers to justify further investment in their territories. In 1929, the British were prepared to try a new solution to the problem - they would support Iraq's inclusion into the League of Nations as an independent state.
