The State and the Pandemic
In the 1920s and then exactly 100 years later in 2022 you can see the same basic pattern right that in times of extreme crisis the state hashes out a bargain. make railway workers work on whatever terms it dictates. In the current crisis however you could say it's even gone a bit of a step further because as I observed during the sort of most severe period of the pandemic in 2020 when people were being labeled as essential workers the state didn't make any offer to these workers for why it would be worth their while or even safe for them to keep doing this work they basically just said we're telling you to keep working.
