The iron-based compound hasn't been found in any exoskeleton in any animals. Sulfur is toxic to snails, so the scales on their feet are full of tiny little pipes that draw sulfur into them. They've evolved a way to survive this very strange diet of sulfur producing bacteria inside of them.
