The Crib and the Crib Girl
By the early 1800s, crib took on a much more scandalous connotation. The villainous Fagan in Charles Dickens' 1838 novel All Over Twist makes several references to breaking into cribs. And then about a century later in the 1940s came the first black American references to cribs as Holmes.
