Mother Jarvis was concerned about the perilously high infant mortality rate. She also organized women's brigades and encouraged women to help each other out regardless of whether they were fighting for the Union or the Confederacy. Julia Ward Howe, who founded Mother's Day, is a different person entirely from her daughter Anna Marie Jarvis.
