The Importance of Recognizing an African Immigrant
The story you tell about this woman in Daras Salaam is in some ways the inverse of Amadou Diallo's story and of these sort of racial classification systems being lost in translation. They make a distinction between black people which is Afro-Americans and Africans and others but it's just that it's not visible. So I think that had they had an inkling when they approached that apartment building that they were dealing with an African immigrant, they would not have reacted the way they did.
