The Density of Land Use in Lowland Britain

You can't walk more than 500 or 1000 metres across the landscape of lowland Roman Britain without being on top of a Roman settlement side. Virtually everywhere that has been examined in recent years in lowland Britain has very high densities of sites. A large scale infrastructure project, the building of HS2, is replicating this pattern. So we are now seeing a densely occupied landscape and one that is highly diverse in land use.
