In the 19 twenties, electricity was flourishing and everyone had electric lighting. In porer neighborhoods in new york city, which is where this story is set, they didn't have electricity. They were still using what was called illuminating gas. So a guy decides that he's going to use that as a cover. The toxicologist gets called to this poor apartment, and it's clearly some kind of gas leak. And when he goes back into the bedroom, he looks and there's a young woman dead in the bed.
