Did Guido Use the Hymn?

Guido's reading of the gamut is basically one step in a long history of the study of pitch content in relation to the gamut as a structure. He didn't necessarily propagate the use of the syllables themselves, but rather of this idea of associative use of intervallic content. Was this something that he came up or did he develop that from someone else's idea? I am not sure that he completely invented it.
