Brian Befini: Captain Kidd used a pirate ruse to capture two ships friendly to England. He says the captains of most merchant vessels carried passes from many different nations. But thinking Kidd was French, both captains produced sets of French papers when he boarded their ships. And as soon as they did, Kidd seized the papers as proof that the vessels he was plundering were in fact French - which made their capture legal under terms of his privateer and commission.
