How to Reduce End Expiratory Lung Volume in Preterm Infants

If the lung volume becomes too large, there can be a decrease in lung perfusion. Too much lung volume can also result in an enemothorax. If you notice that your mechanically ventilated patient is not exhaling fully leading to complications from elevated lung volumes, it is best to briefly disconnect the patient from the ventilator.
